Sequences of Calculus Courses offered by the Department
The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers several calculus sequences
to meet the needs of students with various interests. The sequences
all cover the elements of calculus for functions of one and several
variables. These sequences differ both in focus and in prerequisites
which are determined by Math Placement Levels
. Two are standard sequences, one is an honors sequence, and two
are designed for students with physics in their curriculum.
By completing any one of the sequences below, you will likely satisfy
any requirement of "three semesters of calculus", even though some sequences
require only two courses and others four courses. (The "traditional"
sequence is three semesters.)
In each list below, courses on the same line must be taken in the
same semester. Courses on consecutive lines must be taken in consecutive
order unless noted otherwise.
Honors Sequence
- 600-221 HONORS CALCULUS I.
- 600-222 HONORS CALCULUS II.
Note that the Honors Sequence is taught only Fall/Spring at this time.
Standard Sequence for Students with Placement Level
A
- 600-231 CALCULUS AND ANALYTIC GEOMETRY I.
- 600-232 CALCULUS AND ANALYTIC GEOMETRY II.
- 600-233 CALCULUS AND ANALYTIC GEOMETRY III.
These courses are taught in all semesters.
Calculus and Physics Sequence for Students with Placement
Level A
- 600-228 CALCULUS I WITH PHYSICS. 754-209 PHYSICS I (CALCULUS TREATMENT).
- 600-229 MULTIVARIABLE CALCULUS COORDINATED WITH PHYSICS. 754-210
PHYSICS II (CALCULUS TREATMENT).
- 600-232 CALCULUS AND ANALYTIC GEOMETRY II.
At the present time, due to lack of interest, 600-228 is not being offered,
so this sequence is not available.
Standard Sequence for Students with Placement Level
B
- 600-225 CALCULUS WITH PRECALCULUS I.
- 600-226 CALCULUS WITH PRECALCULUS II.
- 600-232 CALCULUS AND ANALYTIC GEOMETRY II.
- 600-233 CALCULUS AND ANALYTIC GEOMETRY III.
These courses are taught in all semesters.
Calculus and Physics Sequence for Students with Placement
Level B
- 600-225 CALCULUS WITH PRECALCULUS I.
- 600-227 CALCULUS I WITH PHYSICS. 754-209 PHYSICS I (CALCULUS TREATMENT).
- 600-229 MULTIVARIABLE CALCULUS COORDINATED WITH PHYSICS. 754-210
PHYSICS II (CALCULUS TREATMENT).
- 600-232 CALCULUS AND ANALYTIC GEOMETRY II.
At the present time, 600-227 is taught only in Fall and Spring semesters,
and 600-229 is taught only in Fall and Spring semesters. Each must be
taken concurrently with the listed physics course. One may take 600-232
while taking 600-229, but this is not recommended. However, one might
considering taking 600-232 during the summer.
