Faculty Positions
The Department of Mathematical Sciences, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), invites applications to fill two faculty positions at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, starting in August 2009. The department is seeking outstanding researchers with research and teaching interests in the broad areas of (1) biomathematics and (2) computational mathematics. Candidates must have, or expect to complete by August 2009, a PhD or equivalent in mathematics, statistics or a closely related field.
Candidates for the biomathematics position with expertise in systems biology, ecological modeling at the population, community or ecosystem levels, disease dynamics, physiology, genomics, biological aspects of climate modeling, computational biology or similar fields, including those with an aquatic focus, are especially welcome. This position and a corresponding position in Biology are part of UWM's ongoing initiative targeting interdisciplinary research, at all levels, among the Mathematical and the Biological Sciences Departments and the UWM Great Lakes WATER Institute
Members of our computational mathematics group work in numerical partial differential equations, high performance scientific computing, multiscale modeling and analysis, and mathematical biology. Expertise in these fields and experience related to interdisciplinary research are especially desirable attributes of candidates for the computational mathematics position.
Candidates for both positions must have a strong research record and a demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence. Responsibilities include development of a vigorous, collaborative, externally funded research program, teaching two courses per semester, and taking active roles in the undergraduate, Masters and Doctoral programs. A competitive compensation, benefits, and research start-up package is provided.
Applications must be completed online. Applicants who wish to apply for both positions must complete the application procedure at both of the URLs given below. Applicants will upload a CV, cover letter, teaching and research statements, and some publications. Please include links to, or instructions on how to obtain, relevant web pages and publications in your cover letter or CV. In addition, applicants must arrange to have three letters of recommendation (at least one should address the candidate's teaching abilities) sent to the Chairperson at adbell@uwm.edu or

About the Department
The Department of Mathematical Sciences has a positive and collegial atmosphere with highly dedicated faculty. The expansive nature of mathematics is well-represented in the department with 25 pure, applied and computational mathematicians, 6 statisticians/actuarial scientists, and 6 atmospheric scientists.
The undergraduate program has majors in Mathematics (including Statistics), Actuarial Science and Atmospheric Sciences, as well as several interdisciplinary degree programs: Applied Mathematics and Physics; Mathematical Sciences, Business & Economics; and a new major, Applied Mathematics & Computer Sciences. The department plans to take an active role in providing undergraduate students with interdisciplinary research experiences in aquatic biology and mathematical sciences as part of a UWM initiative as well as an NSF grant funded from 2008-11. The graduate program is well-established with diverse research interests in both pure and applied areas. The department is highly active in many key local and national initiatives such as expanding interdisciplinary research and instruction;
increasing the number of students involved in mathematics at all levels; and improving the
quality of mathematics teaching in local school systems.
About UW-Milwaukee
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee encourages interdisciplinary collaborations. The biomathematics position is one of two in an initiative to foster active ties between the departments of Mathematical Sciences, Biological Sciences and the Great Lakes WATER Institute, together with the newly established School of Freshwater Sciences, a unique program in the US. The computational math position is intended to augment an already strong group and further develop interdisciplinary ties.
Within Biological Sciences there is a long tradition of aquatic ecology and interdisciplinary collaboration through the Center for Great Lakes Studies (CGLS) that has just celebrated its 40th anniversary. Faculty in Biological Science work closely with academic staff at the Wisconsin Aquatic Technology & Environmental Research (WATER) Institute, a University of Wisconsin System research facility administered by the UWM Graduate School. WATER is home to CGLS, the Aquaculture and Fisheries Research Center, the NIEHS Freshwater Biomedical Sciences Center, a center of the National Undersea Research Program and the Center for Water Security. From its dockside site in the port of Milwaukee, the WATER Institute represents the only major aquatic research institution located on Lake Michigan and the largest U.S. institution of its kind in the Great Lakes region. The institute belongs to the National Association of Marine Laboratories, and conducts multidisciplinary research using truly oceanographic approaches. UWM is an urban campus with 28,000 enrolled students, yet it is in a pleasant residential neighborhood within walking distance of the relatively undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline.
UW-Milwaukee is an AA/EEO employer and educator strongly committed to maintaining a climate supporting equality of opportunity and respect for difference based on gender, culture, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, marital status, race, color, religion, national origin or ancestry, age, and lawful activities. We particularly encourage applications from individuals who would enhance and diversify our workforce.
