E. Paul and Jane Humke International Mathematics Scholarship

The Department of Mathematical Sciences is pleased to announce the E. Paul and Jane Humke International Mathematics Scholarship.

This scholarship provides an opportunity for UWM undergraduate students majoring in mathematics to participate in the Budapest Semesters in Mathematics (BSM) program or other comparable international study abroad programs in mathematics. The E. Paul and Jane Humke International Mathematics Scholarship Overview information and application materials for the BSM program can be found at

E. Paul and Jane Humke International Mathematics Scholarship Application Overview.

The BSM program provides highly motivated North American undergraduate students of mathematics an opportunity to experience the mathematical as well as the general culture of Hungary. Through the BSM program, students in their junior/senior years spend one or two semesters in Budapest and study under the tutelage of eminent Hungarian scholar-teachers. Hungary has a long tradition of excellence in mathematics education. Further information on BSM can be found at

Mrs. Jane Humke is donating funds to create this scholarship in memory of her late husband E. Paul Humke. Jane’s son Professor Paul D. Humke, currently at St. Olaf College, received his PhD from UWM in Mathematics in 1971 with advisor Professor F. Bagemihl.

Background information on E. Paul and Jane Humke appears below. We are very pleased and excited about this wonderful opportunity. Our sincere thanks to Jane Humke and her family.

E. Paul Humke (1912-2000) and Jane Knowlton met at the old State Teacher’s College (a predecessor of U.W.M.) in 1935 when she was Treasurer of the Junior Class and he was President. Paul with his brother Robert were mainstays of the varsity basketball team and participated in track and field as well. When Paul was inducted into the U.W.M. Athletic Hall of Fame in 1979, Jess Rudiger referred to him as the “original legend in his own time.” He graduated with a major in Biology and a minor in mathematics, but after graduation found a job teaching mathematics and coaching basketball at Washington High School. He returned to Madison during the summer sessions after graduation, receiving a Masters degree in Education in 1938. Jane completed her undergraduate degree in what would now be called special education and taught in “schools for the deaf” in both Eau Claire and Sheboygan following graduation. When the two married in 1938, Jane returned to Milwaukee. Paul taught at Washington High until 1949 when he moved to Whitefish Bay to become Chair of the Mathematics Department, a position he held until the year before his retirement in 1971. Under his coaching, the Mathematics Contest Teams from Whitefish Bay won innumerably many competitions including the winning of six consecutive state mathematics competitions.

Jane and Paul have two sons, Paul, a graduate of U.W.M. and now a Professor of Mathematics at St. Olaf College, and Bill, a postman in West Bend. Paul and his wife, Bonnie have three children, Kristi, Eric and Peter and two grandchildren, Benjamin and Serianna Rockswold. Bill has one son, Willie; he and his wife Kathy reside in Fond du Lac.
