Math Department Awards

Morris and Miriam Marden Award in Mathematics
Professor Morris Marden graduated from Harvard with a Ph.D. in Mathematics and came to Milwaukee in 1930 to take up teaching at one of UWM's predecessor institutions. He was instrumental in starting the graduate program at UWM. The Mathematical Sciences Department at UWM received the first Master's degree program and the first Ph.D. program because of his hard work. Professor Marden received worldwide recognition for his research. Upon his retirement, he donated funds to establish student awards and a visiting lecture program.

The intent of the award is to encourage both undergraduate studies in and writing of mathematics. By preference, therefore, the award will be given for a well-written paper on some aspect or application of mathematics. The paper need not be written specifically for the Marden Award; papers originally written for coursework, independent study, professional reports, or other reasons are acceptable. In the event that no sufficiently strong paper is submitted, the award committee may decide to replace the requirement of a paper by course work, including transcripts.

Applicants must be UWM undergraduates and should submit a paper (if possible), an unofficial copy of their UWM transcript, and two letters of recommendation from UWM faculty members. Papers should be on some aspect or application of mathematics and should be approximately five to eight typed pages.

For further information contact Kevin McLeod, 229-5269, EMS E481, kevinm@uwm.edu or Karen Brucks, 229-5113, EMS E465, kmbrucks@uwm.edu. Completed applications should be submitted to the Chair, Professor Allen Bell, EMS E404, adbell@uwm.edu, by May 1. (application form)

Alice Siu-Fun Leung Awards in Mathematics
Alice Siu-Fun Leung earned a B.S. Degree with a major in Mathematics from UWM in January, 1973. In her will she donated funds to establish an award for outstanding UWM undergraduate students in Mathematical Sciences. (application form)

Bill Carlson Undergraduate Scholarship in Atmospheric Science
Bill Carlsen, WTMJ weathercaster from 1951 - 1972, was one of the United States' first television weathercasters. A scholarship in his name, administered jointly by UWM and WTMJ, has been established in his memory. (application form)

Ernst Schwandt Teaching Award
The Ernst Schwandt Teaching Award goes to Graduate Teaching Assistants in Mathematical Sciences who are judged to have an outstanding teaching performance during the academic year. This award comes from the Ernst Schwandt Memorial Fund. The fund honors Professor Ernst Schwandt, a former faculty member who was keenly involved in the training of Teaching Assistants as Teachers.
