The Monthly Special

Each month you'll find something new here—an unpublished speech of Olson's for example, or some correspondence. I'll keep each new piece on this page for three months, then remove it or move it to a different portion of this web site.

Fifty Years Ago: December 1958 (age 59)

Nothing to report.

Thirty-fiveYears Ago: December 1973 (age 74)

In mid-December, Sigurd learned that he had been chosen as the 1974 recipient of the John Burroughs Medal, the highest honor in nature writing. While technically the award was given in honor of his book Wilderness Days, it was in this case a recognition of all his works, since the book was mostly a selection of previous essays. He would receive the award in April.
