The overall objective of the Pilot Project Program is to fund an array of proposals
that promise innovative environmental health sciences and encourage multiple
investigators/teams of investigators, leading to major grant funding from NIEHS
and other relevant national agencies. It is anticipated that the program will
serve as a primary means to attract new investigators to the Center, both ones
at the beginning of their independent careers and others in mid-career. Among
them will be a significant number of clinical and community health scientists.
In addition, the program will also continue to serve as a means to support Center
members embarking on new directions in their research.
In order to reach these objectives, we have the following specific aims:
1. To utilize the program to support environmental health research
by new and established scientists, both those joining the Center and other already
Members of the Center.
2. To stimulate multi-disciplinary research involving 2 or more investigators
distributed along the research continuum from the environment and environmental
health to clinical medicine and public health.
3. To support of feasibility studies linking basic and clinical (environmental
medicine or public health) scientists in the study of complex diseases and disorders
that impact children.
4. To encourage proposals in the targeted research areas
5. To support proposals related to the National Children’s Study and in the area
of Great Lakes/freshwater and children’s diseases.
6. To stimulate innovative Community Outreach and Education Core (COEC) pilot projects
that lead to effective outreach and to the development of the area of environmental
health communication.
