Program Description Center for International Education |
Welcome to the MAFLL Program
MAFLL is an interdisciplinary curriculum leading to a Master of Arts degree in Foreign Language and Literature. It is the combined Graduate Program of three departments:
Participating faculties are: Classics, Comparative Literature, French, German, Hebrew Studies, Italian, Linguistics, Slavic Languages, and Spanish. The MAFLL Program's most important feature is its flexibility. It is designed to meet the needs of teachers, translators, professionals using world languages in their work, and students continuing for a Ph.D. in languages, literatures, or linguistics. Rather than follow a prescribed curriculum in each area, you make a series of choices that allow you considerable latitude in planning your concentration. You may also take related courses in areas outside of your concentration, up to nine credits. A number of concentrations within MAFLL can be designated on transcripts. They include:
Students may concurrently complete two concentrations, such as Spanish and French, or German and Comparative Literature. Many of our students also participate in these associated programs: The MAFLL curriculum is enhanced by the strong international climate at UWM. Three Centers offer programs that enrich the study of world languages, cultures, and literatures.
The UWM Union Theater, in collaboration with MAFLL faculty, offers a rich program of international films, including yearly French, Latin American film festivals, and festivals in other traditions, such as Indian, Iranian, Korean, and Taiwanese film.
