Milton Text

Artist William Hyde ignored the Art Nouveau trend in book illustration at the beginning of the twentieth century with his pastoral, idyllic illustrations for this 1904 edition. Hyde employed etchings, mezzotints and copper engravings in this edition, but the overall quality of his images have received mixed reviews from scholars.

This copy contains a letter of presentation to the Right Honorable Earl of Rosebury signed by the publisher and bears the Earl's bookplate. The publication of this edition corresponded with the unveiling of a statue of Milton at St. Giles in Cripplegate.
