LTC WorkshopsThe LTC offers various workshops to assist faculty in developing their courses. Click on the link above to view the Workshop Schedule and Registration for these workshops. Workshops available include scanning, streaming, basic D2L usage, advanced D2l functions, eletronic presentations, and more. If you do not see a workshop schedule in your area of interest, please contact us. Our Summer 2005 Workshop schedule is NOW AVAILABLE! Visit LTC Workshop Schedule and Registration to view and register for our upcoming workshops.
Workshop DescriptionsDesire2Learn (D2L) Blowout Workshop D2L 'blowout' workshops cover all aspects of learning and using the Desire2Learn Course Management System in one 3 hour session. The workshops are designed for instructors and teaching assistants who will use D2L in their UWM courses. D2L is a course Web authoring tool for giving students online access to course information, grades, discussion forums, and other Web-based instructional features. All workshops are held as 'hands-on' instruction with trainers available to assist participants.
eGrading Essentials for Instructors This workshop is ONLY available to instructors who have already applied and who have been accepted to participate in the eGrading pilot program. D2L instructors are now able to export final grades directly from D2L and import them into PAWS without having to re-enter them manually. To be able to do this, you have to learn how to create a grade scheme within D2L to translate numerical scores into letter grades. The LTC will hold special workshops from mid-April through the end of the semester to teach faculty how to use this "eGrade" process safely and correctly. Because of the requirement that D2L instructors have special training to use the eGrading process, we are making this process available only to a limited group of 50 faculty this semester, with a preference given to faculty whose individual class sizes exceed 80 students. If you want to be included in this pilot project, please contact us (LTC@uwm.edu) to let us know as soon as possible.
Student Response Systems (SRS) Workshop SRS workshop covers both technical and pedagogical aspects of learning and using TurningPoint in a 1.5 hour session. Examples of "best clicker practices" in the classroom are included. SRS allow instructors to integrate questions into their PowerPoint presentations; students send feedback through a handheld wireless response unit (or clicker). Used effectively, they have the potential to transform traditionally passive large lecture classes into stimulating interactive classes. Please note that all workshop participants MUST already be familiar with PowerPoint.
Student Response Systems II (SRS) Workshop: Assigning Points, Quizzing, and Importing into D2L SRS Workshop covers grading students' responses in Turning Point and transferring that data into Desire2Learn (D2L) in a 1.5 hour session. We will discuss how to assign point values to items and grade those items in Turning Point. Further, we will illustrate exporting the data from Turning Point and importing your students accumulated points for the lecture into D2L. The process allows instructors to assign credit to students' responses and efficiently enter that data into the D2L Gradebook for students to review their progress as well as easy final grade computation for instructors. Please note that you must have attended the SRS Workshop I prior to attending this workshop.
Student Response Systems III (SRS) Workshop: Advanced Uses of Turning Point SRS Workshop III covers advanced uses of Turning Point software in a 1.5 hour session. We will demonstrate how to gather demographic information to use in creating reports or to perform real-time demographic comparisons by response option. We will discuss how to cross-reference the responses of one question to another set of responses. This function, called data slicing, is particularly useful for analyzing demographic information. Next, we will illustrate how to use comparative links to compare the responses from several slides on a single slide's chart to be used for pre-post questions. We will discuss using conditional branching, which allows you to control the order of slides in your presentation based on the responses received from the audience allowing for targeted lectures based on student comprehension and response to a question. Based on the audiences. response to a question, the presentation navigates to somewhere else in the presentation. Finally, we will cover the TurningPoint Parser, which is a tool that automatically creates TurningPoint slides from Microsoft Word files from previous exams or publisher's files.
PowerPoint (PP) Basics Blowout Workshop PowerPoint 'blowout' workshops cover all basic Microsoft PowerPoint functions in one 2 ˝ hour session. PowerPoint is an extremely powerful instructional tool that can be used for much more than presenting bulleted text outlines in class (though it can do that, too!). PowerPoint permits instructors to easily load any object, e.g., photos and drawings, text, graphs and charts, audio and video clips, into slides for presentation. All workshops are held as 'hands-on' instruction with trainers available to assist participants.
Other departments throughout the university offer courses that can help you in learning the skills needed to develop materials for your online, hybrid, or technologically enhanced courses. |
