Office of Legal
Affairs

UWM
has four full-time and one half-time staff attorneys, each of whom
is available to assist UWM faculty, staff, and administrators on matters
affecting the University. If you would like to speak with one of our
attorneys, please call 229-4278 and indicate that you have a new matter
or question for the intake attorney. Each week, one attorney is assigned
to respond to incoming calls involving new matters and legal questions.
While all of our attorneys are qualified to handle incoming calls, your
matter/question may be referred to another attorney in the office with
a particular expertise.
In some cases,
the intake attorney may not be immediately available to speak with you
because of obligations to other clients. However, an attorney will respond
to your call as soon as possible. If you provide some basic information
about your issue to our Office Manager, Cheryl, the intake attorney
or an attorney with a particular expertise in your area of concern may
be better prepared to assist you when your call is returned. Information
provided to the Office Manager for this purpose will be kept confidential.
If you have
received, whether by mail or in person, legal
documents that involve your position or work at UWM, you should
contact the Office of Legal Affairs immediately. State
law provides for legal representation and for payment of money judgments
for state employees in most cases; however, you must inform the Office
of Legal Affairs of any pending legal matter.
Please note,
however, that the Office of Legal Affairs does not provide personal
legal services for University employees or students. If you are a currently-enrolled
UWM student with a personal matter, you can contact the University Legal
Clinic at (414) 229-4140. The Clinic is located on the third floor of
the Student Union.
If you are not
a currently-enrolled UWM student but are in need of personal legal advice,
you can contact the Milwaukee Bar Association Lawyer Referral and Information
Service at (414) 274-1901.
Although this
site is designed primarily to serve the information needs of faculty,
staff, and administrators, all visitors are invited to browse, learn,
and comment.
The Office of
Legal Affairs often receives requests about how to access legal information
of interest to UWM faculty, staff, and students. With these questions
in mind, we have compiled a list of links to policies, procedures, statutes
and other resources. These links are organized by topic.
