Completing the JMC Major Under Requirements in Effect Prior to Fall 2008

  1. Successfully complete at least 36 credits in Journalism and Media Communication (including JMC 101 and 201) with a grade point average of at least 2.5 in JMC courses.
  2. Pass the senior seminar, JMC 661 (Seminar in Media Communication and Society).
  3. Pass JMC 559 (Law of Mass Communication).
  4. Pass at least 18 credits in JMC courses numbered 300 or above (including JMC 559 and 661).
  5. Pass at least 12 credits numbered 300 or above in a single department, certificate, or program other than JMC.
  6. Complete the requirements of at least one of the following four submajors:

    1. Print Journalism

      Students who have passed JMC 203 (News Writing and Reporting) must also pass JMC 500 (Advanced Reporting).

      Students who not yet taken JMC 203 (News Reporting and Writing) must pass both JMC 204 (Integrated Reporting) and JMC 500 (Advanced Reporting).

    2. Broadcast Journalism

      Students who have passed JMC 242 (Radio News Reporting) must also pass JMC 342 (TV News Reporting).

      Students who have not yet taken JMC 242 (Radio News Reporting) must pass both JMC 204 (Integrated Reporting) and JMC 342 (TV News Reporting).

    3. Advertising/Public Relations

      Students who have passed JMC 222 (Advertising Principles and Practices) or JMC 224 (Principles of Public Relations) must also pass JMC 524 (Strategic Communication Campaigns).

      Students who have not yet taken JMC 222 (Advertising Principles and Practices) or JMC 224 (Principles of Public Relations) must pass both JMC 207 (Introduction to Strategic Communication) and JMC 524 (Strategic Communication Campaigns).

    4. Media Studies

      Student who have passed JMC 262 (Principles of Media Studies) must also pass JMC 562 (Media Studies and Culture).

      Students who not yet taken JMC 262 (Principles of Media Studies) must pass both JMC 262 (Principles of Media Studies) and JMC 562 (Media Studies and Culture).


Completing the JMC Minor Under Requirements in Effect
Prior to Fall 2008

To complete the JMC minor, students must earn at least 18 credits in JMC courses. Nine of the credits must be in JMC 101, JMC 201, and JMC 661. At least 6 of the other credits must be earned in courses numbered 300 or above. Students must achieve a grade point average of at least 2.5 in JMC courses.
