Martha Boehm

Office: Johnston 317
Phone: 229-6308
E-mail: maboehm@uwm.edu
Course: JMC 142 (Television and Radio in American Society)
Education: B.A., Journalism and Mass Communication (UW-Milwaukee)

Biography: In May 2007, Martha graduated from UW-Milwaukee with a bachelor's degree in journalism and mass communication with an emphasis in broadcast journalism. However, she missed her graduation ceremony because she spent two weeks in Australia with the International Scholar Laureate Program for a Delegation on Journalism. The time she spent there sparked her interest in researching Australia's broadcast media system and comparing it to our own.

Besides traveling, she also enjoys playing and watching sports and going to the movies and quoting lines from them. She was on UWM's swim team in her sophomore year, and she interned in the news department at WUWM-Milwaukee Public Radio in spring 2006 as well as in the news and sports department at WITI-TV (FOX 6) in summer 2006. She would like to pursue a career as a TV travel or sports journalist.

Alicia Boll

Office: Johnston 332
Phone: 229-6308
E-mail: alboll@uwm.edu
Course: JMC 260 (Contemporary Non-Fiction Media)
Education: B.F.A., Art, Journalism and Mass Communication (UW-Milwaukee)

Biography: Alicia was born and raised in the now-disappearing cornfields of Cottage Grove, WI, a suburb of Madison. After a three-semester stint at UW-Madison she transferred to UW-Milwaukee in search of a different photography program (and a much-needed change of scenery). Realizing that a career based solely in the arts could very well land her on the streets, she added broadcast journalism to the mix to pursue a photojournalism career. Alicia graduated from UWM in 2005 and has been working as a part-time photojournalist and ENG tech for WISN-TV ever since. She spends the bulk of her weekends waking up at 1:00 a.m. to edit tapes, shoot crime scenes, and run live shots for "12 News This Morning." In 2006 Alicia returned to UWM to begin work on a documentary about Jewish culture in Wisconsin's small towns. By 2007 she officially had become a graduate student in the mass communication program. An avid volunteer, Alicia has a strong interest in facilitating Milwaukee's struggling community development. She plans to focus her graduate studies somewhere within the broad topic of the media and strong communities.

In December 2006, she graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a bachelor's degree in journalism. During her years at the school, she worked for the school newspaper and was a contributor for a Korean newspaper in Chicago. Her interests are varied; they include gender (sexuality) and media, media effects/roles in politics, media and violence, and international media/journalism.

Youngchi loves doing outdoor activities and having fun at what she does. She also loves reading thriller, mystery, and romantic comedy books as well as women's literature. She hopes that someday she can be a capable and kind professor like the professors at UWM.

Course: JMC 101 (Introduction to Mass Media)
Education: B.S., Psychology (University of Wisconsin La Crosse)

Biography: Jenn, a first year graduate student at UWM, was born and raised in the Milwaukee area. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 2005 with a bachelor's in psychology. After the bartending world lost its allure she moved back to Milwaukee in hopes of finding a "real job"; upon finding one, she looked for a way to lose it just as quickly. Her aspiration to go back to school was always a thought but is now finally a reality. Her research interests reside in Media Law, and she is beginning to develop a thesis on libel law. In her free time she likes to travel, paint, and attend as many Brewer's games as possible. She looks forward to the challenges that teaching will bring and plans to work toward a career as a professor.

DeAnna Fabiano

Office: Johnston 334
Phone: 229-3249
Email: dfabiano@uwm.edu
Course: JMC 201 (Media Writing)
Education: B.A., English (UW-Parkside)

Biography: This is DeAnna's first year as a TA and, although she graduated with a bachelor's degree in English rather than mass communication, she feels prepared and excited to embrace a new subject; despite her naturally apprehensive and nervous demeanor and tendency to sweat profusely under pressure, she works best when running somewhat blind into a challenge. She enjoys using the words "although" and "despite" in unnecessarily long sentences.

DeAnna would like to work on a literary magazine with glossy pics of amateur art and also looks forward to researching some topics that fascinate her: sex and relationships (although she hates to admit this interest because it makes her feel ordinary), education, language and consciousness, mental illness, the Facebook frenzy, monsters in literature and film, the drug culture, the popularity of beat literature, the French New Wave, the strange desire to reproduce, the history of anorexia, her hand fetish, and many more.

She would like to create both observational and reflexive documentaries but has a lifelong goal to cinematically and/or theatrically adapt Don DeLillo's White Noise and/or Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio. Although she thinks that Cosmo Kramer is the sexiest man in syndication, her ideal man is a Woody Allen-slash-Tom Selleck-a la Magnum P.I. blend.

She loves chocolate (Ugh! That ordinary thing again), creative non-fiction, walking by the lake, Godard's Band of Outsiders, pink lemonade green tea, driving without a destination, international soccer, daydreaming, quotes, Pete and Pete, watching people, and Bruce Springsteen's I'm On Fire. Her favorite letter is "L."

Alicia Haywood

Office: Johnston 317
Phone: 229-6308
Email: ahaywood@uwm.edu
Course: JMC 560 (History of Mass Media)
Education: B.A., Broadcast Journalism (UWM); Post-Graduate Certificate in Content Creation for Film, Television, & Digital Entertainment Media (UCLA-Extension)

Biography: Twelve years after saying goodbye to the Midwest, radio, television, and independent film producer Alicia Haywood returns to UWM on a much-needed break from Hollywood! She's hoping that this arctic reality check will offer some perspective on the educational value of the media and allow her to reset her career path. To date, Alicia's action-packed career credits include ABC Radio Networks, The History Channel, E! Entertainment/The Style Network, King World Productions/CBS Television Distribution, and production accounting work for more than a dozen television movies and series, as well as 28 theatrically-released feature films. Alicia has also produced three short films that have successfully screened in dozens of film festivals across the US and Canada. One of those films has been licensed for national television syndication (set to air throughout the first quarter of 2008). Alicia is a current member of American Women in Radio and Television and the National Association of Black Journalists.

A final word on hobbies: none! She's been too busy working. But now that she's back in town, Alicia is looking forward to developing a few (as soon as it reaches 75 degrees)!

Matt Turner

Office: Johnston 324
Phone: 229-3249
E-mail: mjturner@uwm.edu
Course: JMC 101 (Introduction to Mass Media)
Education: B.A., Journalism and Mass Communication, with a minor in Psychology (UW-Milwaukee)

Biography: Matt vividly remembers saving up for his first Crash Test Dummy action figure as a child growing up in Madison, Wisconsin. A short time after he finally purchased it, he wanted a Ninja Turtles action figure too. Following that, it was G.I. Joe, Game-boy, more turtles, and the list went on. After a time, he began to wonder where his wants and desires were coming from and whether they were even his own. Out of these innocent, juvenile ponderings grew a fascination with the media and the ways people are affected by the messages. These days, it's a cell phone, an ipod, and a car-but are these desires of his any less artificial than those of his naive youth?

As a TA, he wants to make media studies as exciting to students as it is to him by helping to reveal the many less noticeable ways we are affected by the media we consume. After all, if one's very desires and even body image can be so easily manipulated, then it has never been more essential to be critical of what we consume and what we believe.
