The Advertising and Public Relations submajor focuses not only on developing skills such as writing and visual composition for advertising and public relations careers, but also on providing a curriculum that emphasizes creative strategic thinking. This submajor is grounded in the belief that a liberal arts education coupled with professional skills training is the best path to a successful career. It also requires strong written, visual, and oral communication skills. Students focusing on advertising and public relations can find careers with PR and advertising firms, as well as in government agencies, non-profit organizations or corporations.
Specific career paths will define the responsibilities of an advertising/public relations practitioner; however, designing graphics and page layout, conducting market research, writing press releases, video scripts, or ad copy, and executing marketing campaigns all fall within the scope of an advertising/public relations professional.
* Note: It is recommended that students complete the required courses as soon as they are eligible, leaving time in their education to pursue internships and other elective classes.
