In the summer of 1955, Sig and his fellow "voyageurs" traveled by canoe down the Upper Churchill River of Saskatchewan, 500 miles of wild river. "It was a trail that led from the height of land where waters flow to the Arctic and east to Hudson Bay. Every portage, camp site, and rapids, every mile of this waterway of lakes and rivers was steeped in the drama of exploration and trade," he wrote in The Lonely Land.
