Environmental Groups: Canada

Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society
Olson helped this group get underway in 1963, when it was called the National and Provincial Parks Association. Catch up on wilderness preservation efforts in Canada; this site also contains an excellent set of links to a number of other Canadian wilderness and environmental organizations and to federal and provincial environmental agencies.
Wildlands League
Sigurd worked often with this Toronto-based group, which is dedicated to the preservation of Ontario's wild places.

Environmental Groups: United States

Izaak Walton League of America
Sigurd was associated with this group longer than any other. He joined it in 1924, two years after its founding, and from 1948 until his death in 1982 served as its wilderness ecologist.
The Wilderness Society
Olson was a charter member of the group (formed in 1935), joined its governing council in 1956, served as vice president from 1963-1968, and as president from 1968-1971. He was the first recipient of its highest honor, the Robert Marshall Award.
National Parks and Conservation Association
Sigurd served as vice president from 1951-1953, and president from 1953-1959.

Government Agencies: Canada

Ministry of Natural Resources
Olson dealt often with this Ontario agency, responsible for management of the Quetico and the province's other parks, fisheries, and wilderness areas.

Government Agencies: United States

U.S. National Park Service
Sigurd was an advisor to the Park Service for many years, helping to identify lands with national park system potential, writing master plans, and giving inspirational talks to people in the field. He didn't develop such a close relationship with any other federal agency.
U.S. Forest Service
Sigurd's interactions with this agency most often were related to Superior National Forest and its Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. A number of other national forests have their own web site, too, which can be reached through this agency home page.
