April 1957 (age 58)

On April 15, Sigurd wrote in a letter to Floyd Storms that he is opposed to using herbicides as a forest management tool because there isn't enough known about the effects of the chemicals on the ecosystem. He also expressed skepticism about prescribed burning, saying that "to use fire as a management tool is something else again, especially in view of the short lifetime of man who cannot wait for the slow processes of nature to take place."

This month also saw an important exchange of letters with Frank Hubachek about the proposed bill to create a national wilderness preservation system.
