September 1970 (age 71) This has been a very busy period for Sigurd as a conservationist, and Sigurd is tired. On September 7th he writes to a friend that he and Elizabeth are about to go spend two weeks resting at her childhood farm home in Seeley, Wis.: I am feeling fine but the summer has been rough with people coming and going all the time and then trying to keep up with my writing, conservation problems, and masses of correspondence. Today is Labor Day and the curtain comes down. After the vacation, he writes to his agent, Marie Rodell, on Sept. 25th that he needs to slow down: I am resigning the presidency of The Wilderness Society next summer and all active conservation involvements which includes my consultancy to the Dept. of Interior. Since my Florida adventure [he is referring to his heart attack in November 1968, I find everything takes more time and that I cannot burn the candle at both ends as I did for so many years. I know now the time has come to make a choice for I simply cannot serve both God and Mammon. |
