From July 23-August 13, Sigurd was canoeing 500

would later recount the trip in his 1961 book The Lonely Land.

Sigurd
is involved in a minor (though not to him) dispute with Alfred A.
Knopf over the proposed title for his next book. His editor at Knopf
wants to call it Sig Olson Country. Sigurd writes to his
agent, Marie Rodell, "I simply cannot go along with that and
never will. I'd rather cancel the whole project than consent." He
reached a compromise that didn't attach his name to the entire region.
The book would come out in 1972 with the title Sigurd F. Olson's
Wilderness Days.
