The big event this month for Sigurd was his first canoe expedition with the group that the media dubbed "the Voyageurs." They followed the 266-mile section of the historic voyageur's trail from Grand Portage to Fort Frances, and received a lot of press coverage in Canada. July 1969 (age 70)

On July 8, at the Izaak Walton League's convention in Cincinnati, Sigurd receives the group's highest honor, the Founder's Award. He also officially retires as the organization's wilderness ecologist.
