Welcome to Service Learning!

Each semester, the UWM Institute for Service Learning collaborates with participating faculty members to offer nearly 1,000 students a chance to enrich their studies through organized community service. By melding academics with service, course work comes alive and students learn civic responsibility as they deepen their understanding of the community in which they live.

We are proud to have developed strong relationships with more than 100 community partners in the greater Milwaukee area. Our partners benefit from the creativity and energy our students bring to their agencies and the services they provide. In return, community partners help connect students to the needs and opportunities of the city and challenge them to become agents of change for a better world.

Whether tutoring young children, mentoring teens, assisting older adults or working in agencies that grapple with such complex issues as hunger, homelessness or environmental preservation, the opportunities for real-world experience are as diverse as they are rewarding. Those experiences are made even more meaningful through classroom discussion and reflection.

UWM faculty offer students a service learning option in more than 20 courses representing disciplines ranging from the humanities to health sciences. Depending on the course, students are required to do between 10-15 hours of service per semester or complete a service learning project.
