Programs

The Department of History offers M.A. programs that prepare students for careers in teaching, in historical research, and in archives, museums, historical societies, historic preservation agencies, libraries, and government. Its courses cover a wide array of geographically, chronologically, and thematically defined topics.

At the master's level, the Department offers four options:
  1. a general degree in History;
  2. a specialization in Public History, for those interested in areas such as museum work, archival administration, and historic preservation, with an intensive multi-disciplinary option in historic preservation;
  3. a coordinated Master's program in History and Library and Information Science; and
  4. a specialization in Urban Historical Studies for students who intend to pursue a Ph.D. in Urban Studies.

The Department also participates in interdisciplinary master's and doctoral programs in Urban Studies.

An online version of the Department's Graduate Student Handbook (PDF 145K) provides information about all degree requirements along with other dimensions of the program. Additional information about the Public History Program, the School of Information Studies and the Urban Studies Program are also available online.

Admissions

To be considered for admission, you must meet Graduate School requirements, have an undergraduate History major or 18 credits in History or equivalent preparation. If your overall undergraduate GPA is below 2.75 you can only be admitted on probation. Please consult the Graduate School Web site for more information. (www.uwm.edu/Dept/Grad_Sch/Publications/Bulletin/admission.html). Deadlines: For Fall admission--January 1st; for Spring admission--September 1st.

Send the following information to the Graduate School:

  • completed Graduate School Application and $45 application fee;
  • two official transcripts from each previous institution you have attended; and
  • a statement of purpose outlining your reasons for graduate study in history.

Send the following directly to the Director of Graduate Studies, Department of History, Holton Hall, PO Box 413, Milwaukee, WI 53201:

  • two confidential letters of recommendation from persons familiar with your scholastic achievement and potential (recommendation form waiver ( Word, PDF 15k );
  • a sample of your written work (10 pages minimum with references) that demonstrates your ability to conduct historical research and/or ability to analyze critically the work of others; and
  • scores on the Graduate Record Exam (general test only).

You may apply by completing the electronic application form available through the Graduate School website, www.uwm.edu/Dept/Grad_Sch, or you may request a paper application by calling the Graduate School at (414) 229-6569. The Graduate School website can also provide you with information on registering to take the Graduate Record Exam.

Teaching Assistantship

Applicants to the graduate program are also eligible to apply for a teaching assistantship in the Department. Applications for teaching assistantships are available online ( Word, PDF 10k ) or by calling the Departmental office at 414-229-4362. Applications for the Fall semester are due each year on January 1 and should be sent to the Director of Graduate Studies at the address above. To be considered for a teaching assistantship, your application to the program must also be complete by that time.
