Graduate Awards
A.T. Brown Award for the Best Graduate Paper & Nathan Miller Award for Best Graduate Paper
For the best graduate papers completed in graduate History courses during the previous academic year (September 2006-August 2007). Papers may be submitted by their authors or nominated by instructors.
Two awards of $200. Deadline: November 5, 2007.
Theodore Saloutos Graduate Research Fellowship
For the best proposal for a M.A. thesis in U.S. and North American history. Students must submit an application form and a research proposal. The proposal (no more than 2 single spaced pages) should describe the topic and the research required to complete the project.
One award of $200. Deadline: November 5, 2007.
Stagakis-Stromberg Graduate Research Fellowship
For the best proposal for a M.A. thesis in European or non-Western (African, Asian, Latin American or Middle Eastern) history. Students must submit an application form and a research proposal. The research proposal (no more than 2 single-spaced pages) should describe the topic and the nature of the research required to complete the project.
One award of $350. Deadline: November 5, 2007.
Lucetta Bissell Fellowship
Awarded to student submitting the most promising research proposal, with preference given to proposals that deal with gender issues. Amount of award equal to the mean annual earnings of the Bissell Fund over the previous ten years.
Award of $1000 to be presented in December. Deadline: November 5, 2007.
A.T. Brown Award for Best Graduate Thesis
All History M.A. theses completed during the previous academic year (September 2006-August 2007) will be automatically considered for the award.
One award of $200. No application is necessary.
Frederick I. Olson Scholarship Fund
Awarded to a graduate student who is enrolled in six or more graduate credits, demonstrates financial need, and is a Wisconsin resident. Should two or more students have equal need, the most academically qualified student shall be selected.
One award of $2,500. Deadline: January 1, 2008.
Frank Zeidler International Student Scholar Award
Awarded to a student in support of his/her pursuit of the Master's degree in American history at UWM. Preference will be given to a foreign student of American History, or a local student of American History, or, barring that, a student in any history field. Candidate must have completed all requirements for an undergraduate degree by May 2008 and have substantial preparation in American Studies and/or American history. For full aid for the MA degree the recipient must apply for admission to the UWM Graduate School and for a teaching assistantship in the History Department, as well as meet visa and other requirements for international study in the U.S., be fluent in English and have obtained a minimum TOEFL score of 550 PBT or 213 CBT, and a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 or higher. One award of $1,500.
Deadline January 1, 2008.
Graduate Research Grants
Available to graduate students for thesis research expenses. Students must submit a one-page proposal describing the research project and specifying the costs involved.
Awards up to $1,000. Deadlines: November 5, 2007 and March 1, 2008, the latter subject to availability of funds.
Undergraduate Awards
John F. McGovern Research Award
Any paper written for any History course during the calendar year 2007. Papers may be submitted by their authors or nominated by a faculty member.
Deadline: April 1, 2008.
William A. Renzi Memorial Scholarship
Limited to declared history majors currently in their junior year. Applications should include a transcript of grades, a letter of recommendation from an instructor, and a 2-3 page-double-spaced statement. The statement should explain why the applicant decided to major in History and how he/she expects to use his/her training in History. It should also include a list of extracurricular activities, job experiences, and honors and awards. Candidates may be interviewed by the departmental Awards Committee.
One award of $1000 to be presented in May 2008. Deadline: April 1, 2008.
Undergraduate Research Grants
Available to advanced undergraduates for historical research expenses: e.g., purchase of microfilms or travel to a library or archive. Students must submit a one-page proposal describing the research project and specifying the costs involved. Receipts may be required.
Awards up to $100. No deadline.
