Degrees Offered
Bachelor of Science in Geography
Bachelor of Arts in Geography
Geography majors may earn either a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. Students should consult their major advisor for the choice of a degree. In general, students in physical system Track are recommended for a Bachelor of Science degree. Students in other tracks may choose to graduate with either a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree depending on their advisor's suggestion.
Major Declaration
Students must meet with the department's undergraduate advisor to declare geography as a major. In addition to the major, students also need to specify a track in geography. Majors need to meet with the department's undergraduate advisor to declare or switch a track. Moreover, they are expected to meet with their individual faculty advisor (who they may either request or who will be assigned to them when they declare the major) and report their progress each semester.
All majors must complete the 25-credit core curriculum and the additional requirements specified by a track. In satisfying their major requirements, all students must complete at least 37 credits in geography, 18 of which must be at or above the 300 level, with at least 15 of those taken in residence at UWM. Courses taken outside geography that fulfill geography requirements will be introduced in the GPA. Majors must have a 2.5 GPA in geography in order to graduate.
Core Curriculum
All geography majors must complete 25 credits in the geography core curriculum listed in the undergraduate catalog.
Major Tracks
Students must declare one of the following 5 tracks. The course requirements for each track are detailed in the undergraduate catalog.
- Geographic Information Track
- Urban Track
- Environmental Track
- Physical Geography Track
- Regional and Educational Track
Minor
Students must meet with the department's undergraduate advisor to declare geography as a minor. Geography minors are required to complete 18 credits in geography, at least 9 of which must be at the 300 level or above taken in residence at UWM. Moreover, geography minors must have a GPA of 2.5 or above. The course requirements for geography minors are listed in the undergraduate catalog.
