Teaching Workshop
Date: September 26, 2003
Time: 3:00 P.M.
Location: American Geographical Society Library, 3rd Floor of the Golda Meir Library.
Teaching assistants should work with faculty/lecturers in creating course curriculum. Discussions and laboratories should enhance the material presented in lecture. For many undergraduates, discussion or lab work in one of our courses will be the closest they will work with an instructor during the semester. Labs and discussions should be well taught by a confident instructor. For this reason, it will be important to tackle some issues that teaching assistants may face in the classroom. This seminar will discuss strategies for overcoming challenges in pedagogy.
Topics may include but are not limited to:
- Creating effective group work scenarios.
- Minimizing behavioral problems such as talking, cheating, cell-phone usage, etc.
- Effective curriculum development (particularly for 110 as there is no work book).
- Encouraging student participation. Getting them to contribute to discussion!
- Use of technology in the classroom.
- Critique of pedagogical methods (feedback).
