Grant-Writing Seminar
Date/Time: TBA.
Faculty members must be able to secure funding in order to partake in research endeavors. This skill should be developed ideally before the graduate student is on the job market. These kinds of skills can be gained while applying for funding for dissertation research. Ideally, graduate students should be fully aware of the possibilities for external funding before they head into the field to perform their research. Although knowledge of such funding opportunities is very important, it is unlikely to be of benefit unless the graduate student knows how to go about writing grant proposals. This is a skill that will be taught by faculty members in a workshop setting. Experienced faculty will create a hypothetical grant situation, and take the graduate students through the process of effectively writing a proposal for funding. An additional exercise can be assigned following the seminar, and the results turned into graduate students' advisors, so that they can critique their efforts.
Among others, the following topics may be covered:
- Sources of funding common to research endeavors in geography in general.
- Grant-writing techniques.
