Cloned Phenology Study Lilac
Syringa chinensis, 'Red Rothomagensis'

If you (or a previous observer) received your lilacs as part of the original Northeast/North-Central research project or from Prof. Mark D. Schwartz, this is the type of lilac you have. They were referred to as "Persian" Lilac in the Agricultural Experiment Station network literature. These cloned lilacs have leaves that are about twice as long as they are wide (much narrower than common lilac leaves). Lilacs are not invasive, and the cloned Syringa chinensis 'Red Rothomagensis' lilacs are particularly well-suited as non-invasive scientific instruments since they are sterile and do not produce seeds.

Common Lilac
Syringa vulgaris

This link is for reporting information on common purple lilacs (also called "hedge" or "old-fashioned") that observers have obtained on their own from nurseries, or already had growing on their grounds. Although these plants are NOT clones, their response is generally quite uniform. Common lilacs have leaves that are somewhat "heart" shaped (much wider than cloned lilac leaves).

Arnold Red Honeysuckle
Lonicera tatarica, 'Arnold Red'

This was a cloned honeysuckle plant distributed as part of the original NE/NC research projects. Due to their invasive nature, honeysuckles have not been distributed to observers since 1987, nor does USA-NPN actively support their distribution. USA-NPN honeysuckle observation support on these pages is directed toward legacy plants that began to grow at their present locations prior to 1987.
