Fragaria virginiana/vesca Observations
(wild strawberry)

Submit Data Observations
Introduction to the NPN Native Species Observation Program

Wild strawberries are small plants that grow in open woodlands, abandoned fields, or along roads, and often form little colonies. Leaves grow from the stem base and are divided into three, deep-toothed leaflets, that appear before the flowers. Each plant has three-to-five white flowers that are 7-10 mm long with five petals. Fruits look like miniatures of store-bought strawberries.

You should record when two well-defined phenological events occur for wild strawberry:

  1. First bloom (FB) First select an approximately 1 by 1 meter plot for observation, and then record the date when first flowers are open in at least three places on the observed plants.

  2. Mid bloom (MB) Within the same 1 by 1 meter plot used for first bloom, this is the date when 50% of the flowers are open on the observed plants.

Report by email if any plant appears in poor health.
