Introduction to the NPN Native Species Observation Program

Blue-bead lily (also known as clintonia) is a low plant, often forming colonies, found in moist deciduous or mixed coniferous woodlands with rich soil. Its shiny, overlapping oval leaves (15-30 cm long) appear in sets of 2 to 5 (usually 3) at the base of the stem. The stem rises to a height of 15-40 cm, and has three to six star-shaped, nodding yellowish-green flowers at the top. The fruit is small (about 1 cm), shiny and very blue, appearing later in the summer.

You should record when two well-defined phenological events occur for blue-bead lily:

  1. First bloom (FB) First select an approximately 1 by 1 meter plot for observation, and then record the date when first flowers are open in at least three places on the observed plants.

  2. Mid bloom (MB) Within the same 1 by 1 meter plot used for first bloom, this is the date when 50% of the flowers are open on the observed plants.
