Previous Student GIS Project Competition Winners

 
 

To encourage and award the contributions made by University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee students to the development of geographic information science and technology, the GIS Council at University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee initiated an annual student GIS project competition in Spring 2003. The criteria used were as follows:

1. The project makes significant contribution to advance new theories and methods of Geographic Information Science and Technology.
2. The project demonstrates excellence and innovation in applying theories and methods of Geographic Information Science and Technology.
3. The project shows high quality of presentation in terms of graphic design in the poster and excellent writing of the project report.


The 2007 Winners are:

First place (tied):
Richard R. Shaker,
Master student from the Department of Geography, and
Rama Mohapatra,
PhD student from the Department of Geography, for their paper and poster "Landscape Ecology and Cellular Automation: Investigating Patch Transition in Exurbia."

Brian Thayer, Master student from the Department of Geography, for his paper and poster "Developing A Community Information System To Assist Neighborhood Revitalization Efforts."

Second place:
Michael Kumbera,
Master student from the Department of Urban Planning/Master of Public Administration, GIS Certificate, for his paper and poster "Using GIS for Brownfield Remediation Management."


The 2006 Winners are:

First place:
Richard R. Shaker,
Master student from the Department of Geography, for his paper and poster "Surface Geometry and GIS: Methodology for Predicting Sky-View Factor and Urban Heat Islands."

Second place:
Brad Lenz,
Master student from the Department of Urban Planning,
Richard Shaker, Master student from the Department of Geography,
Andy Turner, Master student from the Department of Urban Planning,
Adam Wirtz, GIS Certificate student, for their paper and poster "Using GIS to Identify Key Locations for Best Management Practices in Milwaukee."

Third place:
Greg Rybarczyk,
PhD student from the Department of Geography,
Rama Mohapatra,
PhD student from the Department of Geography,
for their paper and poster "Evaluating Neighborhood Health Through Empirical Analysis and GIS."

, PhD student from the Department of Geography, for her project "A Prototype Orthoviewer for the American Geographical Society Library — An ArcIMS Site."


The 2004 Winners are:

First place: Jun Luo, Ph.D. candidate from the Department of Geography, for his paper “Modeling Urban Land Values in a GIS Environment.”

Second place: Danlin Yu, Ph.D. candidate from the Department of Geography, for his paper “GIS and Spatial Modeling in Regional Development Studies: Case Study on the Greater Beijing Area.”

Third place: Ken Jenkins, Master of Planning from the Department of Urban Planning, for his project “A Remote Sensing & GIS Study of the Menomonee River Valley.”

Co-Third place: Vikas Lachhwani, Coordinate Master student of Urban Planning and Civil Engineering, and Eok Kim, Ph.D. student from Computer Science, for their project “GIS as a Tool for Facial recognition.


The 2003 winners are:

First Place: Chuanrong Zhang, a graduate student from the Department of Geography, for her project "GML Approached Interoperable Geographic Database."

Second Place: Jill A. Hewitt, a graduate student from the Department of Geography, for her project "Development of Methods to Inventory And Assess Small Constructed Wetlands in Ozaukee County."

Third Place: Jun Luo, a graduate student from the Department of Geography, for his project "Milwaukee Property Sale Information: An Internet GIS Site for the Local Real Estate Market."
