Student GIS Project Competition 2008

To encourage and award the contributions made by UWM students to the development of geographic information science and technology, the GIS Council at UWM holds an annual student GIS project competition. This year, the School of Architecture and Urban Planning teamed with the Wisconsin Land Information Association to sponsor the awards.

Graduate and Undergraduate GIS students submit either a research poster accompanied by an explanatory paper, or a research paper. The criteria used for judging the submissions are:

• The project makes significant contribution to advance new theories and methods of Geographic Information Science and Technology.
• The project demonstrates excellence and innovation in applying theories and methods of Geographic Information Science and Technology.
• The project shows high quality of presentation in terms of graphic design in the poster and excellent writing of the project report or research paper.

Six judges review and evaluate the submitted posters and papers. Based on the evaluation, the award committee selects three projects as winners of the competition.

This Year's Award Winners Are:

Best Student GIS Project for graduate students/GIS certificate students

Second place, generously sponsored by the UWM School of Architecture & Urban Planning:

GIS Certificate, Monique Hassman, Masters student from the Department of Anthropology, GIS Certificate, Sam Hildebrand, GIS Certificate, Rajeev Nanda, GIS Certificate, for their paper and poster "Johnsons Park Health Alliance Community Food Assessment."

Call for GIS Papers/Posters

To encourage and award the contributions made by University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee students to the development of geographic information science and technology, the GIS Council at University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee will hold a student GIS project competition in Spring 2008. All current University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee students are encouraged to participate in this important event.

Graduate and Undergraduate students should submit either:

1) Eligibility:

All competition participants must be students for the academic year 2007-2008 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The project could be a class project, a research project, or an internship project related to geographic information science and technology. For projects resulting from an internship, a letter from a direct supervisor should be provided to verify that the majority work was done by the participant and that the project report was written solely by the participant. Projects that were done in previous years are also eligible to participate in the competition as long as the projects were done at University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee AND the participant is a current University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee student for academic year 2007-2008. Ph.D. students are required to submit course work or research projects that are not related to their dissertation (Do not submit dissertation materials).

2) Number of Awards and Prizes:

The following awards will be given:

Those entrantss who did not win the awards but have submitted a poster can receive $30 to offset the cost of poster production.

3) Procedure and Deadline:

Poster and Paper:
Posters should be no larger than 36 X 54 inches. The poster should contain, at the minimum, a title, your name and affiliated department, an introduction, project methods, results, and a conclusion. The applicant shall make the poster available for exhibition by delivering the poster (hard copy, NOT digital copy) to Tom Brittnacher at the American Geographical Society Library (third floor, east wing, of the UWM Golda Meir Library) by 4:00pm on Monday, May 5, 2008. For assistance with plotting posters, please contact Tom Brittnacher at thomasb6@uwm.edu by 4:00pm on Thursday, May 1, 2008.

The paper shall not exceed 6 pages (double spaced, with font size of 12). The applicant shall hand in one hard copy and one digital copy of the paper. The hard copy paper shall be hand-delivered to Tom Brittnacher at the American Geographical Society Library (third floor, east wing, of the UWM Golda Meir Library) and the digital copy should be e-mailed to Tom Brittnacher at thomasb6@uwm.edu by 4:00pm on Monday, May 5, 2008.

Paper Only:
The paper shall not exceed 8 pages (double spaced, with font size of 12). The applicant shall hand in one hard copy and one digital copy of the paper. The hard copy paper shall be hand-delivered to Tom Brittnacher at the American Geographical Society Library (third floor, east wing, of the UWM Golda Meir Library) and the digital copy should be e-mailed to Tom Brittnacher at thomasb6@uwm.edu by 4:00pm on Monday, May 5, 2008.

Entry Form:
All applicants shall submit a completed entry form by 4:00pm on Monday, May 5, 2008. The entry form can be found at: http://www.uwm.edu/Dept/GIS/flyers/GIS_Comp_Form.html

The winners of the competition will be announced at the Exhibition (see 5 below) on Friday, May 9, 2008.

4) Criteria for Winning Projects:

Six judges will review and evaluate the submitted posters and papers. Based on the evaluation, the award committee will select three projects as winners of the competition.

5) Exhibitions of Posters

All posters will be on display at the American Geographical Society Library (the third floor, east wing, of the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee Golda Meir Library) from 11:00AM to 1:00 PM on Friday May 9, 2008. All competition participants are required to be there during that time to answer any questions. Participants may be asked to briefly present their projects to the judges.

The winners of the competition are encouraged to make a presentation at the GIS Day event in November 12, 2008 to be held at the American Geographical Society Library (the third floor, east wing, of the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee Golda Meir Library).
