We have the winners! After careful deliberation, the judges in the Award
Committee have identified the winners of the 2007 UWM GIS Student Competition.
• First place (tied):
Richard R. Shaker, Master
student from the Department of Geography, and
Rama Mohapatra, PhD
student from the Department of Geography,
for their paper and poster "Landscape
Ecology and Cellular Automation: Investigating Patch Transition in Exurbia."
Brian Thayer, Master student from the Department of Geography, for his paper and poster "Developing A Community Information System To Assist Neighborhood Revitalization Efforts."
• Second place:
Michael Kumbera, Master student from the Department of Urban
Planning/Master of Public Administration, GIS Certificate, for his paper
and poster "Using
GIS for Brownfield Remediation Management."
The criteria used in
the selection are
• The project makes significant contribution to advance new theories and
methods of Geographic Information Science and Technology.
• The project demonstrates excellence and innovation in applying theories
and methods of Geographic Information Science and Technology.
• The project shows high quality of presentation in terms of graphic design
in the poster and excellent writing of the project report.
Congratulations to all the winners! Thanks to all students who submitted their papers and posters.
To encourage and award the contributions made by University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee students to the development of geographic information science and technology, the GIS Council at University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee will hold a student GIS project competition in Spring 2007. All current University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee students are encouraged to participate in this important event. Graduate and Undergraduate students should submit a research poster accompanied by an explanatory paper.
All competition participants must be students for the academic year 2006-2007 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The project could be a class project, a research project, or an internship project. In terms of a project resulting from an internship, a letter from a direct supervisor should be provided to verify that the majority work was done by the participant and that the project report was written solely by the participant. Projects that were done in previous years are also eligible to participate in the competition as long as the projects were done at University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee AND the participant is a current University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee student for academic year 2006-2007. Ph.D. students are required to submit course work or research projects that are not related to their dissertation (Do not submit dissertation materials).
2) Number of Awards and Prizes:
The following awards will be given: the Best Student GIS Project for graduate students/GIS certificate students– the first place, and the second place. The Best Undergraduate Student GIS Project- the first place award for undergraduate students.
Prizes for graduate/GIS certificate students: the first place prize will receive a monetary award $300 and a certificate. The second place prize will receive a monetary award $200 and a certificate.
Prize for undergraduate student: the first place prize will receive a monetary award $100 and a certificate.
There will be $30 for those who did not win the awards but submitted the paper and poster, in order to offset the cost of poster production.
First, the applicant shall make a poster available for exhibition and deliver the poster (hard copy, NOT digital copy) to Tom Brittnacher at the American Geographical Society Library (the third floor, east wing, of the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee Golda Meir Library) by 4:00 pm May 7, 2007.
Second, the applicant shall hand in one hard copy and one digital copy of the paper (either to describe the project or as a standalone research paper). The paper should not exceed 6 pages (double space, with font size of 12). The hard copy paper should be put in Prof. Ghose’s mailbox (Bolton 410) and the digital copy should be e-mailed to Prof. Ghose rghose@uwm.edu by 4:00 PM, May 7, 2007.
Third, the applicant will submit a completed application form found at http://www.uwm.edu/Dept/GIS/flyers/GIS_Comp_Form.html
The winners of the competition will be announced at the Exhibition (see 5 below) on May 11, 2007
Six judges (see below) will review and evaluate the submitted posters and papers. Based on the evaluation, the award committee will select three projects as winners of the competition.
All posters will be on display at the American Geographical Society Library (the third floor, east wing, of the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee Golda Meir Library) from 11:00AM to 1:00 PM on May 11, 2007. All competition participants are required to be there during that time to answer any questions.
The poster size is limited to a dimension of 36 X 54 inches. The poster should contain, at the minimum, a title, your name and affiliated department, an introduction, project methods, results, and a conclusion.
The winners of the competition are encouraged to make a presentation at the GIS Day event in November 14, 2007 to be held at the American Geographical Society Library (the third floor, east wing, of the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee Golda Meir Library).
