LinguisticsUWM Undergraduate Bulletin About the Linguistics ProgramThe Program offers a BA in linguistics and courses in foreign languages. It offers an MA degree in the Master of Arts in Foreign Language and Literature program, and also provides the linguistics component in a number of other graduate programs on campus. Here are the details.The Program has an undergraduate major in linguistics resulting in a BA. There are two majors to choose from: the standard major requires more courses to be taken in the department while the broadfield major allows more language-related courses to be taken in other departments. In addition, there is also a minor program. The Program is a member of the Master of Arts in Foreign Language and Literature (MAFLL) program, in which a degree concentration in linguistics is offered along with a number of foreign languages. In addition, the Program participates in several graduate programs on campus that involve a linguistics component. These are:
Foreign Language CoursesThe Program teaches a number of foreign languages that are not represented by separate departments on campus. At present, we offer Arabic, Chinese, Irish, and Japanese, each on various levels.Job OpportunitiesThere is a job list for those with training in Linguistics at the Linguistic Enterprises' (Linguistics Job List), maintained by the Linguistic Society of America. Its goal is to facilitate the employment of linguistics graduates by offering job lists, allowing linguists seeking work to post their resumes, and providing helpful hints and experiences from those who already earn their living as linguists in the private sector. There is also a discussion forum for posting comments, queries, and requests for help.The jobs available for students with an undergraduate degree in linguistics are roughly the same as those for any liberal arts graduate. Aside from equipping the student with a broad factual knowledge about languages, an undergraduate major curriculum in linguistics provides excellent training in enhancing the student's skills in observation, hypotheses formation, analytic thinking, and problem solving. As a student of linguistics, you will also develop tolerance and appreciation of cultural and linguistic diversity within our society and throughout the world. There are also careers for which linguistics is particularly relevant. These include the following:
If you have a career interest in these fields, you might wish to pursue a linguistics major at the undergraduate level and concentrate on the particular area in graduate study; or you could do a double major in or major-minor combination in two areas. Graduate study leading to master's and doctoral degree in linguistics are available at many universities around the country. A PhD in linguistics puts you in the market for teaching positions at linguistics departments of colleges and universities. |
