Hebrew StudiesUWM Undergraduate Bulletin About Hebrew StudiesThe FLL Hebrew Studies Program is undoubtedly one of the most scholarly/pedagogically rewarding, and equally scholarly versatile in the country. The above earns further cogent validity due to the fact that the entire Program consists of one professor only, and 3-4 instructors; each of them teaches one course only (only two of them teach 2-3 courses). The educational/pedagogical excellence of the Program is plausibly displayed by the fact that three of the Program's teachers earned prestigious teaching awards: Father Michael Fountain, Dr.Tim Crain, and Dr.Yair Mazor. The Program offers a four-semester cycle of both modern Hebrew and Biblical Hebrew. The Hebrew language cycle of courses includes two advanced courses, in which modern/contemporary Hebrew/Israeli literature and culture are taught in Hebrew, while the class' analytical discussions are conducted in Hebrew as well. However, those advanced courses continue cultivating and enhancing the students' grammar command and language skills: writing, speaking, reading, comprehension. Those advanced Hebrew courses are followed by more advanced courses that are conducted entirely in Hebrew. Among those courses are modern Hebrew drama and modern Hebrew children's literature. The FLL Hebrew Studies Program is probably the only Hebrew Studies Program in the country that offers such incredibly unique courses. The bountiful versatility of courses offered by the Hebrew Program does manifest itself in numerous courses that address Hebrew, Jewish and Israeli studies. Among those courses are the following: modern Hebrew language, Biblical Hebrew language, modern Hebrew drama, Modern Hebrew children's literature, Israeli culture, Ancient Egyptian Civilization (that focuses on the reciprocal interaction between ancient Hebrew civilization and ancient Egyptian civilization), Moses, Jesus and Mohammed, Three religions - one God, Introduction to Judaism, women in the Bible, aesthetic/literary aspects of the Bible, Judaism and Christianity, contemporary Israeli film, Jewish civilization, Jewish history, The Dead Sea Scrolls, contemporary Israeli poetry, Holocaust Hebrew poetry and prose fiction, the history of the Holocaust, and more. Most certainly, due to the small number of instructors, not all of those courses are offered each and every semester, but they are rotated. Nevertheless, those courses that are offered and conducted each semester confer on FLL Hebrew Studies Program, exceptional scholarly, educational and pedagogical substance. In addition to a B.A. in Hebrew Studies, the College of Letters and Science offers a Certificate in Jewish Studies through the UWM Certificate Program in Jewish Studies and an advanced degree through the Master of Arts in Foreign Language and Literature (MAFLL) program. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee also maintains a Center for Jewish Studies, which provides special lectures, forms, programming, and other activities to promote and supplement Jewish Studies, in the widest sense, at UWM.
