Graduate Course of Study
MAFLL Plan of Study
A Comparative Literature concentration within MAFLL requires:
- A minimum of 30 credits, distributed as follows:
- 15 credits of Comparative Literature courses. No more than 3 of these credits may come from a thesis or independent study.
- 6 credits of MAFLL Core seminars
- 9 credits of related coursework or independent study. If UWM offers graduate literature courses in the primary foreign language, at least 3 of these credits should be in such a course.
- Demonstrated graduate-level work in the primary foreign literature. Completion of a graduate-level literature course in the language satisfies this requirement; if no such courses are available to UWM, satisfaction of this requirement will be determined in consultation with the graduate advisor of Comparative Literature and the major professor.
- Demonstrated reading knowledge of a second language other than English. Completion of a graduate-level literature course in the language satisfies this requirement; those students who are able to do such work are strongly encouraged to do so when courses are available. Students may also satisfy this requirement by writing a graduate research paper that cites extensively in the target language, by taking an examination, or by other means determined in consultation with the graduate advisor of Comparative Literature and the major professor.
- Successful completion of the written and oral comprehensive exams, based on a reading list developed in consultation with the major professor and other committee members.
