Becoming a Tutor

Want to Become a Tutor?

Tutor PhotoWe are always looking for qualified students from all majors to work in the Writing Center. Veteran tutors will tell you that it is one of the best personal and professional experiences they’ve had during their college career. Not only have they enjoyed becoming part of the Writing Center community and working with fellow writers, tutoring has been enormously helpful in understanding and improving their own writing.

If you are a professor who would like to recommend a junior, senior or graduate student who you believe possesses superior writing and interpersonal skills:

  • Tell the student to pick up an application in the Writing Center (CRT 382), English Department main office (CRT 439) or in the pocket folder opposite Curtin Hall 4th floor elevators.
  • Send a letter of recommendation to Margaret Mika, Writing Center Director, mmika@uwm.edu.

While we accept applications and conduct interviews year round, we hire only at the end of a semester for the upcoming semester. Submission deadlines are on the application.

If you are a currently enrolled UWM junior, senior or graduate student (including post-bacs) who would like to become a tutor:

Pick up an application in the Writing Center (CRT 382), in the English Department main office (CRT 439) or in the pocket folder opposite Curtin Hall 4th floor elevators. Read both sides of the cover sheet to be sure you can provide all of the following:

  • A recommendation letter from a recent professor who can speak to both your writing and interpersonal skills
  • A copy of your college course transcript
  • Verification of a very good GPA
  • At least one recent academic (non-fiction) writing sample

After your file is reviewed, you may be invited for an interview and a quiz designed especially for prospective tutors.

Applicants who are hired should be prepared to meet the following non-negotiable requirements:

  • Choose 4 -10 permanent hours per week to work in the Center
  • Attend 2 (partial) days of tutor classes for pay or 1-cr U/G (English 442)
  • Attend monthly tutor class meetings help Fridays 1-2:30 pm
