English 350-277-001 Introduction to Ethnic Minority Literature: “So Far From God, So Near To Each Other”: A Close Look at Contemporary Mexican-American Literature Instr:
Melissa Schoeffel
Course Information: TR 2:05-3:20 AUP 189
Course Description In this course we will read the novels of three Chicana and three Chicano writers as well as one novel, The Crystal Frontier, by influential Mexican author Carlos Fuentes (which explores the contested boundary between Mexican and U.S. cultures and politics). We will analyze, in particular, how Chicano and Chicana authors imagine the negotiation of dual identity, push the boundaries of traditional gender roles, and confront the burden as well as celebrate the tradition of family. Our reading of these seven novels will be enhanced by learning about some of the social conditions faced by Mexicans and Mexican-Americans in the U.S. as well as the by the critical response to the individual novels. Students will be asked to write weekly responses to some aspect of the
assigned text and to share these responses on a class reflector list.
They will also be asked to respond, on the reflector and in class discussion,
to what their classmates have written. Students will also be expected
to workshop their final papers and to revise them using feedback from workshop.
