Course Description

"I'll bet you're a big Lee Marvin fan, aren't you."

Why is it that so many directors feel compelled to make films about gangsters or hit men? What influences do they have in common? What is the relationship between the individualism sought by the film auteur and the ethos of masculine cool present in many of these films? How do these films work as vehicles for modern alienation, new wave experimentation, or postmodern pastiche? Why does the gangster genre enjoy international popularity? Is there an international style of crime films?

We'll answer these questions by looking at a wide range of films by Jean-Luc Godard, Jean-Pierre Melville, Takeshi Kitano, Hype Williams, Seijun Suzuki, Quentin Tarantino, Rainer Fassbinder, John Boorman, John Cassavettes, Sam Peckinpah, and others.
