Current Students

Below are biographies of some of our current students:

Andy Buchenot is in his third year of Ph.D. work in Rhetoric and Composition. He currently serves as the Graduate Student Representative for the Rhet/Comp concentration and is a good person to contact if you have questions about the program (buchenot@uwm.edu). His research interests include critical literacy theory, visual rhetoric, multi-modal composing, emerging writing technologies, and critical pedagogy.

Elizabeth Florian is a first-year Ph.D. student. She serves as the Assistant Coordinator of the Writing Center. Her research interests include feminist-rhetorical theory, composition pedagogy, rural Wisconsin women's writing, and writing center theory.

Jenny Hussa is in her first year of the Ph.D. program, having recently completed her MA at UWM in rhetoric and composition. Simultaneously a high school English teacher and graduate student, she focuses her research on teacher training, composition pedagogy, k-12/university composition connections, identity construction, conceptions of "authority," and feminist rhetorical theories. Jenny has presented at Feminism(s)/Rhetoric(s) in Houghton, MI (2005); CCCC in San Francisco, CA (2005); and the Thomas Watson Convention in Louisville, KY (2004). She also develops summer workshops for English teachers in the Greendale School District.

Shereen Inayatulla is a 3rd year Ph.D. student. Her research interests include critical pedagogy, teacher-identity, queer theory and gender studies. Recently, she has presented at the Feminism(s)/Rhetoirc(s) conference and at the Conference on College Composition and Communication.

Rie Kumaki is a fourth-year Ph.D. student. She has taught different levels of composition classes including English 095, English 101, English 102 and English 105. She studies critical pedagogy and composition theories with the emphasis on the issues of language, difference and identity.

Michael Lewis is a first-year Ph.D. student in Rhetoric and Composition. His research interests include the rhetorical tradition, critical pedagogy and Bakhtinian theory. As a teacher, Michael is also interested in the ways in which pedagogical and rhetorical theory answer to classroom practices.

Michael T. MacDonald is in his second year of M.A. work in Rhetoric and Composition. His research interests include, globalization, critical literacy, and writing center practice and theory.

Katie Malcolm is a third-year Ph.D. student and the Coordinator for English 095 and 105. She studies critical pedagogy, basic writing, and literacy in relationship to feminist, marxist, and post-colonial theories.

Justin Moody is a first year M.A. student and a Writing Center tutor.

John Raucci is a second-year Ph.D. student and an instructor for English 101. At the moment he is interested in student resistance theory, writing assessment, popular culture, and critical theory/pedagogy. In his spare time he watches professional football and can be found rummaging through local record stores in search of rare vinyl.
