Graduate School Bulletin: English Program
Each year Modern Studies accepts a small number of new M.A. and Ph.D. students. Competition for admission and financial aid is usually keen. The admissions committee looks particularly at the student's preparation for the kind of theoretical graduate work emphasized in Modern Studies. The concentration welcomes applications from students holding undergraduate degrees in related disciplines as well as in English or Comparative Literature. While letters of recommendation and GPA and GRE scores are carefully considered, the committee also pays very close attention to the applicant's writing samples. The samples should demonstrate the student's ability to work in the field of Modern Studies and exhibit that command of expository prose expected of candidates for teaching positions.
