Adult/University-Level TESOL Certificate Program
The Adult/University-Level TESOL Certificate Program is designed for students who wish to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) to adults. This program accepts students who:
- have not yet completed the bachelor's degree
OR
- have already earned the bachelor's degree but have no plans to continue with an M.A. degree in TESOL
TESOL Certificate Program Requirements
Students in the certificate program are required to complete six courses (18 credits) plus a teaching internship (3 credits), as outlined below.
- English 400 (Introduction to English Linguistics) or Linguistics 350 (Introduction to Linguistics)
- English 403 (Survey of Modern English Grammar)
- English 404 (Language, Power, and Identity)
- Linguistics 420 (Introduction to Second Language Acquisition) or English 402 (Theories of Language and Literature: Introduction to Second Language Acquisition)
- English 565/Linguistics 565 (Introduction to Adult/University-Level TESOL)
- English 567 (Materials for ESL Instruction
- Teaching Internship, 3 credits: English 569 (Internship in Teaching ESL to Adult Learners)
Students receive the certificate upon completion of all of the required coursework and the teaching internship with a GPA of 3.0 or better.
There is a time limit of three years from initial enrollment for completion of the certificate.
