M.A. Program in Adult/University Level TESOL
Prerequisites:
- English 400 (Introduction to English Linguistics) or Linguistics 350 (Introduction to Linguistics) or the equivalent
AND
- English 403 (Survey of Modern English Grammar) or the equivalent
NB: Applicants who have not taken the pre-requisite courses in advance of applying can be admitted with a "deficiency" and allowed to take these courses at the beginning of their MA course of study.
Required Coursework:
- Linguistics 370 (General Phonetics & Phonetics Practicum)
- Linguistics 420 (Introduction to Second Language Acquisition)
- English 565 or Linguistics 565 (Introduction to Adult/University Level TESOL)
- English 567 (Materials Development for ESL Instruction)
- English 761 (Discourse Analysis)
- Two of the following courses:
- Curriculum & Instruction 503 (Language Assessment in the Bilingual Classroom)
- English 738 (Theories of Language, Literature, or Composition: Contrastive Rhetoric)
- English 738 (Theories of Language, Literature, or Composition: Teaching Second Language Writing)
- English 760 (Research Methods in Linguistics and ESL)
- English 764 (Sociolinguistics)
- One of the following three courses:
- English 805 (Seminar in English Language)
- English 806 (Seminar in Linguistics)
- English 812 (Seminar in Theories of Composition and Rhetoric)
Internship:
- Internship in Teaching ESL to Adult Learners (English 789)
NB: The internship requirement may be waived by a student's MA committee when the student already has substantial ESL teaching experience, or when s/he has already completed the internship required for the TESOL certificate.
