MA in TESOL for Adult Learners Teaching Internship

The final stage in the completion of the MA in TESOL for Adult Learners is the teaching internship (Eng 789). During this internship, the students complete a related MA Project developed in consultation with their MA committee. The internship gives students the opportunity to:

gain first-hand experience in applying the teaching approaches, techniques, and strategies encountered during their earlier coursework
solidify knowledge of the technical aspects of language teaching
define or refine their own philosophy of language teaching and learning
investigate in the classroom some especially interesting aspect of second language teaching or learning; this work serves as the basis for the MA project

During the internship semester, the student completes between 40 and 60 hours of teaching under the supervision of an experienced ESL teacher. The site for the internship is chosen by the student in consultation with his/her advisor and the coordinator of the internship program. A number of approved internship sites are available in Milwaukee and elsewhere.

NB: The internship requirement may be waived by a student's MA committee when the student already has substantial ESL teaching experience, or when s/he has already completed the internship required for the TESOL certificate.
