The English Department's concentration in Linguistics offers several programs of study designed to enable students interested in language and linguistics to teach English to speakers of other languages, to explore more deeply the intricacies of language structure and use, and to prepare for an academic career in linguistics. Core faculty for these Plan D programs are drawn from the Department of English and the Department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics. The faculty has a wide variety of research interests, but is especially strong in language typology and universals, functionalist approaches to language structure, and discourse analysis. Our programs also enjoy close connections to affiliated faculty housed in other campus programs and units, such as the individual language programs,
