The Ph.D. program involves course work, proficiency in a second language, a preliminary examination, a dissertation, and a final defense. Students who did not receive their M.A. or equivalent degree from UWM must pass an Academic Review. Doctoral students must complete all degree requirements within ten years from the date of initial enrollment in the doctoral program. Students beginning the doctoral program during fall 2000 or thereafter must pass their preliminary examination within five years.
