English 350-192-008 Freshman Seminar: Tough, Sweet, And Saucy: Exploring Style In Literature, Writing and The Arts Instr:
Charles Schuster
Course Information:
TR 9:30-10:45 CRT 466
COURSE DESCRIPTION: In this course, we will explore that complex concept called "Style:" what it is, what it can be, its relation to meaning and form, its problems and possibilities. During the semester, we'll read a variety of literary styles, and try out a number of stylistic possibilities in writing. We'll also investigate style in the visual arts such as in photography, advertising, architecture, film, and painting. My hope is that we can go on at least one field trip to a nearby site that will expand our thinking. By the end of the term, you should have a better understanding of what style is, how it gets created, and its effects on others and yourself.
