English 350-192-003 Freshman Seminar: Global Media Instr:
Professor Andy Martin
Course Information: MW 12:30-1:45 CRT 286
Course Description In this course we will study a cross-section of the images and information that circulate within, and attempt to come to grips with, the international system known as "Globalization." Beginning with Thomas Friedman's "The Lexus and the Olive Tree," we will branch out to consider a number of examples of so-called "World Culture," and "Global Visual Culture." Our initial enquiries will stem from such questions as, for example, what does this new global system look like and how is it lived? How has it been imagined, portrayed, filmed, and critiqued? Is it really a new phenomena or merely the continuation of older world systems?
