Dr. Charu Malik
Course Information:
TR 3:30-4:45
CRT 124
Course Description This course provides an introduction to contemporary literature by Asian American writers from diverse backgrounds. This literature, by writers who are recent enough arrivals to the U.S. to be recognized by a hyphenated appellation, offers a rich opportunity to study the locations, formations and understandings of identity, ethnicity, culture. Further topics to be explored include cross-cultural perspectives, diasporic and transnational concerns, and race/gender/class issues as shaped by the dynamics of ethnicity. While we will examine the specific cultural ways these texts are constructed, our primary approach to reading them will be rhetorical. Students’ active participation in class discussion is expected.
Course requirements include regular writing assignments (journals, essays)
and oral presentations based on readings and research.
