Course Description

This course focuses on works by four contemporary African American women–Julie Dash, Tananarive Due,  Kasi Lemmons, and Octavia Butler–and is concerned with  the visual image, as well as the written word. Other issues to be considered include: the central signs encoded within the texts; departures from a linear progressive construct of history; the use of community-based narratives; the text as political.
