Course Description This course focuses on works by four contemporary African American women–Julie
Dash, Tananarive Due, Kasi Lemmons, and Octavia Butler–and is concerned
with the visual image, as well as the written word. Other issues
to be considered include: the central signs encoded within the texts; departures
from a linear progressive construct of history; the use of community-based
narratives; the text as political.
