English 350-431-001 Topics in Advanced Writing: Information Architecture Instr:
Dave Clark
Course Information:
Mondays 5:30-8:10 CRT 127
Course Description In this course we'll be talking about and working on the architecture of "information spaces." An "information space" could be a virtual space like a Web site or a database, or it could be a library, a town hall, a workplace, etc. Basically, it's any place that is designed to help people interact with information, and our goal will be learning about better, more sophisticated ways of helping people interact effectively. We'll write some more theoretical papers, and we'll also be working on a number of projects. Early in the semester we'll focus on reading and learning about spaces, and we'll write analyses of existing spaces to get some practice in becoming critical about how information is used and presented. Later, we'll construct information spaces of our own, for example constructing Web sites, databases, multimedia projects, etc. The course is designed to be a nice balance of theory and hands-on practice,
and I assume no prior knowledge of the technology; we'll do outside-of-class
workshops to help everyone get up to speed.
