Course Description

During this course you will explore techniques to incorporate various types of lore (cultural lore, occupational lore, library and field research, etc.) into your narratives. We also will examine ways contemporary writers employ these techniques in their work. You will intensively critique one another’s short stories in terms of structure, technique, craftsmanship, and meaning. This course requires you to write two new pieces of short fiction (total of forty pages). In addition, you must complete all readings and provide a written critique of all stories workshopped in this class. Course Text: Best American Short Stories, 2002.
